Working As a Fashion Model

A fashion models job is a job that can sometimes seem like a lot of fun and easy, but can also be very hard work. Models often travel miles and miles for their shoots. With photo shoots often being in far away destinations they spend a lot of time away from their families which can be very hard. On the other hand, travelling the world can be great and can give you lots of new experiences. Models get the chance often to stay in nice hotels in wonderful parts of the world; it can be a great adventure for them.

Another thing that really sticks out when you think of a model is their physical condition. Fashion models usually need to be very slim, tall and attractive in the face. In order to keep to these attributes models need to keep themselves looking exceptionally good. Models need to exercise a lot and eat a well balanced diet. They also need to have a regimented skin and body care routine that can often cost a lot of money. On the other hand, models are being paid a lot of money for looking beautiful and strutting up and down the catwalk. Read the rest of this entry »

Transgender Models Breaking The Mold

Fashion design is a celebrated profession for many reasons. To name a few, it is praised for it’s extremity, creativity, originality, open-minded nature and for it’s knack for finding and producing beauty out of odd or idiosyncratic circumstances. All of this is true about fashion design, yet sadly the modeling world does not always reflect this open-mindedness. High fashion models have been notoriously exclusive to white women of a very specific height and weight range. In other words, an overwhelming percentage of working, high fashion models are tall, thin and very white. It is unfortunate that even in a unique and creativity-based industry, there are still some aspects of it that remain extremely homogeneous. However, just like the rest of the world, the fashion and modeling world is experiencing ground-breaking changes. Recently, several high fashion lines have signed on nontraditional models to represent their upcoming collections. This shows evidence of the appreciation of a new kind of beauty, the type of beauty that comes from being confident in their own differences from the rest of the homogenous world.

One such example is the model most recently known as Lea T. Lea T, who used to be Leandro Cerezo, is a Brazilian model that got her start as the assistant to Riccardo Tisci, creative director for Givenchy. Tisci took notice of Lea’s stunning looks, and has referred to her as “innately elegant”, and “aristocratic”. He has cast her in the Givenchy label’s newest ad campaign. Additionally she appears in this month’s French Vogue. In the magazine, she is posing nude, with her long hair falling over her breasts, while she covers her genitals with her hand. Although Lea T is preparing to undergo a full hormonal and physical sex change, she still currently has male genitalia.

Another example is the Bosnian-born model Andrej Pejic. Pejic made his start modeling in Australia, Read the rest of this entry »

Plus Size Takes the Runway

Blame television, magazines and giant billboards for setting the standards on how fashion and style should look like. An afterthought though – blame the public itself for setting the trends on what’s hot and what’s not. Many generations have passed, and this generation is no exception that – models are defined to be skinny, size-zero bodies for women and well-toned and rock-hard abs. This notion is widespread among magazine covers, billboards and catwalks.

Dress styles and other fashion essentials are also created to suit these fashion models. And celebrities and stars are the perfect example of these. This means that you’re not in the circle if you don’t have such shoulder blades and the hour-glass figure. Because of this set standard, several problems arise like eating disorders and being fanatics of weight control. This is also one of the reasons why teenagers suffer from anxiety because of peer pressure and the need to always look good.

Amidst all these, one fashion Read the rest of this entry »

Fashion Models and Fashion Photography is Everywhere

We see it on billboards and in magazines the world over. So, what exactly does it take to be behind the camera? Aside from an interest in shooting the human form, you will also need to be prepared to forgo modesty in the pursuit of the best shot. Many fashion photographers are subject to nudity and awkward poses, thus the need to forgo modesty. If you’re passionate about the possibility of becoming a fashion photographer, the following advice may help to get you on your way.

It is very unlikely that a self-taught photographer will be picked up in the world of high-end fashion. While he or she may get the occasional freelance job, the chance of becoming employed with a magazine or particular designer is slim. The executives in this fast paced world are seeking photographers who have been educated in photography and are experts in beautifying a subject on film. Fashion photography takes a great deal of precision and the photographer is required to understand color schemes. Fashion photography also requires an understanding that, most of the time, Read the rest of this entry »

Model Salaries

The very word modeling conjures up visions of glamour, good clothes, and luxurious surroundings and seemingly everlasting good looks. Yes, successful models do have access to all these and more. The reason for all these trappings of a luxurious lifestyle is the high model salaries. The salary of a supermodel is estimated to be in the range of $40 – $50 million a year.

Not all models make that kind of money. The salaries move in tandem with the popularity commanded by the model. The more the popularity, the higher is the salary. The lower rungs of the ladder are occupied by models whose salaries are fixed by the firms that employ them. As they do more and more assignments and become popular they move into a slot where they themselves can fix the rate to be paid to them. Most models make hundreds of dollars a day.

A snide comparison equates an average model’s one day salary to that of an average teacher’s six month pay packet. Snide, indeed, but true. Model salaries are quite substantial. Even middle rung models make around $100,000 a year.

How To Look Like A Plus Size Fashion Model In 5 Easy Steps

As the shift in the “ideal” feminine body shifts from waif-like to voluptuous, leaders in the Plus Size modeling industry are rapidly become style and beauty icons. Powerful feminine curves, glowing skin and luscious hair may seem a far-fetched beauty goal for most, but ALL women, of all shapes and sizes can look Plus-Goddess fantastic by following just a few simple tips.

First: Find the right undergarments for your body. A well-fitting bra and Spanx are a girls best friends, they’ll slim, shape and enhance your curves. A properly fitting bra allows for better posture and supports your bust effectively, creating a sexy curvy shape. Spanx are a nylon-like support garments for the thighs and tummy, comfortable and utterly magical in their smoothing ability!

Second: Dont deny your true size. I know it would feel better to see a lower number size on your jeans, but trust me, when it comes to the fit of your clothing, your look will be made, or broken on the basis of fit. If you are bulging out of your pants at the top (the dreaded muffin-top) its going to kill the sexiness of any outfit. On the flip side, oversized clothing is just as unflattering as sizes that are too small; you’ll simply look larger than you are. Plus size women look best in tailored, slightly fitted styles created to enhance and flatter curves.

Third: Play up your favorite features. If you have sexy legs, flaunt them in a knee-length pencil skirt or city shorts with a matching jacket. If you have a tiny waist or great cleavage, choose fitted blazers or wrap v-neck sweaters to show what you love about yourself. Consider the atmosphere when choosing how much of your favorite feature to show-off, your legs may be fabulous, but there’s only so much of them that’s appropriate to be showcased at work.

Fourth: Great, polished hair is a must. Whether you have wavy, curly, or straight hair, always make sure its styled, healthy and shiny. Misting with a curl enhancer, or smoothing a shine enhancer throughout helps keep most styles looking sleek, and is easy to Read the rest of this entry »

Posing Fashion Glamour Models – 5 Easy Steps

A creative body position for fashion glamour models is enchanting. You do not stop with a critical eye at any one part. It is a fresh interpretation of a position you know is possible, but haven’t seen very often. It is just right and right up to the last detail.

If you have already delved into creative posing, have you ever stopped to wonder at what point something ceases to be ordinary and takes on the qualities of the craftsman? The body-line is the first and most prominent stroke on the page. It is the theme-line of your picture. It is established with a specific purpose in mind and serves as a basis of creative departure for other parts of the body. It can be a long-line, a zigzag or perhaps a borderline combination of the two.

Have you noticed that all theme-lines create both physical and mental impressions? To a fine degree, you sense attitudes, character and vitality in each. For that reason we say that the body talks. It is much more than a trunk to which the limbs are attached, it is the stem through which design and story must flow smoothly … enhanced rather than hindered.

Every movement made by a model is read by the way it relates (in conformity or opposition) to …other parts of the body, elements surrounding the body, story or purpose of the picture, picture mood and feeling and composition of the page.

Even in silhouette, you do sense attitudes and can feel life within and throughout the body, and when necessary, you can complete the details from your heightened imagination.

So, whether you prefer orthodox or offbeat attitudes, you find, of necessity, that you must be a kind of photographic physician with the ability to examine a pose, diagnose it quickly, and prescribe correction without disturbing its unity.

A body can take the shape of an ‘I’, which is standing up straight, ‘C’ which is a natural curve,?and ‘S’?where the head is tilted away from an extended leg. Each body-line reflects a mental attitude each reflects as well as possibilities for physical change.

THE LONG-LINE OF THE BODY

to the inexperienced eye, offers but little opportunity for change or variation for fashion glamour models. The reason being, that those who cannot recognize what is basic, cannot measure change. Basic long-lines of the body conform to three symbols the body can duplicate: an ‘I’, a ‘C or an ‘S’. Each symbol can assume a vertical, horizontal or diagonal position in relation to the frame of the picture. Thus, basic long-line potentials for body position are nine.

These nine basic long-line body positions have infinite possibilities for variation. Here is a list of five ideas for creative departure which are easy to remember when you associate each variation to the number of parts of the body to be changed.

Try this simple count-down before shooting.
